Essential descriptive adjectives for everyday German
Colors and size adjectives are some of the most useful vocabulary at A1 level. They follow the same adjective agreement rules as all other adjectives. When used as predicate adjectives (after 'sein'), they don't change. When placed before nouns, they take the appropriate ending. This topic focuses on learning the words themselves — the endings follow the general adjective rules.
Colors used as predicate adjectives don't change
Das Auto ist rot. Die Jacke ist blau. Der Himmel ist grau. After 'ist', 'sind', 'war', etc., colors stay in their base form.
Colors before nouns follow standard adjective endings
ein rotes Auto (neuter, -es), eine blaue Jacke (feminine, -e), ein grüner Baum (masculine, indefinite, -er). Apply the same table from adjective agreement.
Size adjectives (groß/klein/lang/kurz) work the same way
Er ist groß. (predicate, no ending) | Ein großer Mann (masculine indefinite) | das kleine Haus (neuter definite).
Some colors come from nouns and are sometimes written differently
Orange (the color and the fruit) is often used without ending: ein orange Hemd OR ein oranges Hemd. Rosa (pink) also sometimes stays unchanged: ein rosa Kleid.
