Advanced Subordinate Clauses

um...zu, ohne...zu, anstatt...zu, and purpose/infinitive constructions

At B1, you expand your use of subordinate clauses to include infinitive constructions — shorter, more elegant alternatives to full subordinate clauses. These are: 'um...zu' (in order to), 'ohne...zu' (without doing), 'anstatt...zu' (instead of doing). Additionally, you learn more subordinating conjunctions for expressing conditions, concessions, and result: falls, obwohl, sodass, solange, indem.

1

'um...zu' — purpose/goal: in order to

Replace 'damit + verb-last clause' when SAME subject: Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland arbeiten zu können. (I learn German in order to be able to work in Germany.) Structure: comma + um + [objects] + infinitive + zu. 'Zu' always goes before the infinitive. With separable verbs: um aufzustehen (to get up).

2

'ohne...zu' — without doing something

Er verließ das Haus, ohne sich zu verabschieden. (He left the house without saying goodbye.) | Sie arbeitete die ganze Nacht, ohne eine Pause zu machen. (She worked all night without taking a break.) Same subject rule applies — different subjects require 'ohne dass'.

3

'anstatt...zu' (or 'statt...zu') — instead of

Anstatt zu lernen, spielte er Videospiele. (Instead of studying, he played video games.) | Er kaufte ein Auto, anstatt das Geld zu sparen. (He bought a car instead of saving the money.) The infinitive construction is preferred when subjects are the same.

4

'indem' — by doing, by means of

'Indem' expresses how something is achieved: Er lernte die Vokabeln, indem er sie täglich wiederholte. (He learned the vocabulary by repeating it daily.) | Man kann gesund bleiben, indem man viel schläft und Sport treibt.

5

'falls' and 'sofern' — conditional clauses (if)

'Falls' and 'sofern' both mean 'if' (in case that): Falls es regnet, nehmen wir ein Taxi. (If it rains, we'll take a taxi.) 'Sofern' is slightly more formal: Sofern du zustimmst, können wir beginnen. (Provided you agree, we can start.) Both take verb-last order.

anstatt/statt + separable verb: aufzugeben (zu between prefix and stem)

indem: describes the method

Falls du nicht kommen kannst, sag mir bitte Bescheid.

If you can't come, please let me know.

'Falls' for conditional — verb last: kommen kannst

  • The key rule for um/ohne/anstatt + zu: both clauses must share the SAME subject. If subjects differ, use the full subordinate clause: um dass/ohne dass/anstatt dass.
  • Separable verbs in zu-constructions: 'zu' goes BETWEEN the prefix and the verb stem: auf + zu + stehen = aufzustehen | an + zu + rufen = anzurufen.
  • 'Um...zu' is extremely common in everyday German. Master it: Ich brauche Zeit, um das zu verstehen. (I need time to understand this.) | Er kommt her, um zu helfen. (He's coming to help.)
  • Contrast 'damit' (subordinate clause, any subject) with 'um...zu' (infinitive, same subject only): Ich erkläre es, damit du verstehst (you understand — different subject) vs. Ich lese, um zu lernen (I learn — same subject).
  • Using um...zu with different subjects: ✗ Ich schreibe, um du lernst → ✓ Ich schreibe, damit du lernst (different subjects need 'damit').
  • Putting zu in the wrong place with separable verbs: ✗ um aufzustehen → wait, this IS correct! ✗ um zu aufstehen → ✓ um aufzustehen.
  • Forgetting the comma before um/ohne/anstatt: ✗ Ich gehe nach Hause um zu schlafen → ✓ Ich gehe nach Hause, um zu schlafen.
