Politeness in German is expressed through specific grammatical forms and set phrases that must be learned as patterns.
Polite requests: Konjunktiv II of modals
Könnten Sie (could you), Dürfte ich (may I), Würden Sie (would you), Möchten Sie (would you like). These are the standard polite request forms in German: Könnten Sie bitte wiederholen? (Could you please repeat?) | Würden Sie mir helfen? (Would you help me?) | Dürfte ich kurz stören? (Might I briefly interrupt?)
Expressing wishes and offers politely
Ich hätte gerne... (I would like...) in shops and restaurants — more polite than 'ich möchte' and far more polite than 'ich will'. Ich würde gerne... (I would like to...) for activities. Hätten Sie eventuell...? (Would you perhaps have...?) adds 'eventuell' for extra softening.
