Passive — Advanced Tenses and Constructions

Passive alternatives, modal passive, and passive across all tenses

At B2, you master all passive voice tenses and learn elegant alternatives to passive construction. German has several ways to express passive meaning without using 'werden': reflexive passive (Das lässt sich machen), man-passive (Man könnte das ändern), sein + zu-Infinitive (Das ist zu beachten), and nominalization. Each carries slightly different nuance and is used in different registers.

1

Full passive tense overview

Present: wird gemacht | Preterite: wurde gemacht | Perfect: ist gemacht worden | Pluperfect: war gemacht worden | Future: wird gemacht werden | Modal+Passive: muss gemacht werden (modal + Pp2 + werden at end). In complex verb clusters, 'werden' always appears at the very end.

2

Passive with modal verbs — complex verb cluster

Das Problem muss gelöst werden. (The problem must be solved.) | Das Formular sollte ausgefüllt werden. (The form should be filled out.) | Der Brief kann jetzt abgeholt werden. (The letter can be picked up now.) Structure: modal (conjugated) + [content] + Partizip II + werden at end. Three-verb structure at end in subordinate clauses: ..., weil das Problem gelöst werden muss.

3

Reflexive passive alternative: sich lassen + Infinitiv

Das lässt sich (leicht) machen. (That can be (easily) done.) | Das Problem lässt sich nicht so einfach lösen. (This problem cannot be easily solved.) | Diese Frage lässt sich nicht beantworten. (This question cannot be answered.) Expresses possibility — corresponds to 'can be done' passive. Very common in formal German.

4

sein + zu + Infinitiv — obligation or possibility passive

Das ist zu beachten. (That must/should be noted.) | Der Text ist sorgfältig zu lesen. (The text is to be read carefully.) | Das ist nicht zu ändern. (That cannot be changed.) This construction expresses necessity (must/should be done) or impossibility. Very frequent in instructions, warnings, and formal documents.

5

Man-passive — impersonal agent

'Man' (one/people) + active verb is often equivalent to passive: Man spricht hier Deutsch = Hier wird Deutsch gesprochen. | Man kann das Problem lösen = Das Problem kann gelöst werden. 'Man' is preferred in spoken German where passive sounds overly formal.

Construction Structure Nuance Example
Standard passivewird/wurde + Pp2Neutral: action happensDas wird repariert.
Modal passivemuss + Pp2 + werdenObligation or possibilityDas muss repariert werden.
lassen + sich + Inf.lässt sich + Inf.Possibility: can be doneDas lässt sich reparieren.
sein + zu + Inf.ist + zu + Inf.Obligation or impossibilityDas ist zu reparieren.
man + activeMan + AktivAgent = unspecified personMan kann das reparieren.
Zustandspassivist + Pp2Resulting state (not action)Das ist repariert.
Main clause Subordinate clause with passive modal
Das muss gemacht werden...., weil das gemacht werden muss.
Das kann abgeholt werden...., wenn das abgeholt werden kann.
Das wurde repariert...., nachdem das repariert worden war.
Das ist zu beachten...., was zu beachten ist.

Die Unterlagen müssen bis Freitag eingereicht werden.

The documents must be submitted by Friday.

Modal Passiv: müssen + eingereicht + werden

Das lässt sich nicht so einfach erklären.

That cannot be explained so easily.

Reflexive passive alternative: lässt sich + Infinitiv

Die Bedingungen sind genau zu prüfen.

The conditions must be checked carefully.

sein + zu + Infinitiv for obligation

Nachdem der Brief abgeschickt worden war, kam die Antwort.

After the letter had been sent, the reply came.

Plusquamperfekt Passiv: war + Pp2 + worden

Er ärgerte sich, weil das Problem nicht gelöst werden konnte.

He was annoyed because the problem could not be solved.

Subordinate clause verb cluster: gelöst werden konnte (Pp2 + werden + modal at end)

  • The verb cluster in subordinate passive clauses follows the rule: Pp2 → werden → modal. So: ..., weil das Problem nicht gelöst werden konnte (gelöst + werden + konnte). Practice this order.
  • 'Sich lassen' is particularly elegant for expressing 'can be done' in formal German and is preferred over passive in many written contexts: Das lässt sich arrangieren vs. Das kann arrangiert werden.
  • 'Sein + zu + Infinitiv' appears constantly in instructions and official texts: Anträge sind persönlich einzureichen (Applications must be submitted in person). Recognize and use this form.
  • The full passive conjugation spectrum: know Present, Preterite, Perfect, and Modal passive cold. The others (Future Passive, Pluperfect Passive) you should recognize but need less often.
  • Wrong verb order in subordinate passive: ✗ weil das gemacht werden ist → ✓ weil das gemacht worden ist (Perfekt Passiv in subordinate).
  • Confusing 'ist gemacht' (Zustandspassiv: it's done, state) and 'ist gemacht worden' (Perfekt Passiv: it has been made): Das Essen ist fertig (Zustandspassiv: state) vs. Das Essen ist gekocht worden (Perfekt Passiv: action completed).
  • Adding 'ge-' to 'worden': ✗ geworden in Perfekt Passiv → ✓ worden (no 'ge-' in passive Perfekt).
