Basic Verbs in Präsens

sein, haben, wohnen, gehen, kommen, machen...

The present tense (Präsens) is the most important tense for A1 learners. It describes current states, habitual actions, and even near-future events. Every verb must be conjugated (changed) to match the subject pronoun — unlike English, which mostly just adds -s for the third person.

1

Regular verbs follow a predictable conjugation pattern based on the verb stem

Remove the infinitive ending -en (or -n) to get the stem. Then add the appropriate ending: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en. Example: wohnen → wohn- + endings.

2

Irregular verbs 'sein' (to be) and 'haben' (to have) must be memorized separately

'Sein' and 'haben' are the most important verbs in German. They are used both as main verbs and as auxiliary verbs for forming compound tenses (Perfekt). Their forms are highly irregular.

3

Some verbs have stem vowel changes in the 2nd and 3rd person singular

Strong verbs change the stem vowel for du and er/sie/es: lesen (to read) → du liest, er liest; fahren (to drive) → du fährst, er fährt; schlafen (to sleep) → du schläfst, er schläft.

4

Verbs ending in -d, -t, -fn, -gn add an extra -e- before certain endings for pronunciation

Example: arbeiten → du arbeit-est, er arbeit-et (not du arbeitst). This makes the word easier to pronounce.

Pronoun Form Example
ichbinIch bin Lehrer. (I am a teacher.)
dubistDu bist nett. (You are nice.)
er/sie/esistEr ist groß. (He is tall.)
wirsindWir sind hier. (We are here.)
ihrseidIhr seid laut. (You all are loud.)
sie/SiesindSie sind Lehrer. (They/You are teachers.)

duhastDu hast Hunger. (You are hungry.)
er/sie/eshatEr hat Zeit. (He has time.)
wirhabenWir haben Fragen. (We have questions.)
ihrhabtIhr habt Glück. (You all are lucky.)
sie/SiehabenSie haben Recht. (They/You are right.)

ihr-twohntIhr wohnt da drüben.

I am from Ukraine.

'Sein' — the most important German verb.

Wir haben einen Hund.

We have a dog.

'Haben' — used as a main verb here.

Sie geht jeden Tag in die Schule.

She goes to school every day.

'Gehen' is a regular verb: er/sie/es geht.

Er kommt aus Österreich.

He comes from Austria.

'Kommen' is a regular verb: er/sie/es kommt.

Was machst du heute?

What are you doing today?

'Machen' regular: du machst.

Das Kind schläft nicht.

The child is not sleeping.

'Schlafen' has a vowel change: schlafen → er/sie/es schläft.

  • Memorize 'sein' and 'haben' immediately — they appear in almost every sentence and every compound tense.
  • When you learn a new verb, check if it's regular (machen, spielen, wohnen) or irregular (fahren, lesen, schlafen).
  • German present tense translates both 'I live' AND 'I am living' in English. Ich wohne in Berlin = I live / I am living in Berlin.
  • Verbs ending in -ieren (studieren, passieren, fotografieren) are always regular and never have a vowel change.
  • Create a 'verb notebook' — write the infinitive, 3rd person singular (er/sie/es form), and a sample sentence for each new verb.
  • Using the infinitive form instead of conjugating (✗ Er sein Lehrer → ✓ Er ist Lehrer).
  • Forgetting the vowel change in irregular verbs (✗ Er schlaft → ✓ Er schläft).
  • Confusing 'sein' and 'haben' as auxiliaries — some verbs use 'sein', others use 'haben' in Perfekt.
  • Adding -st to verbs ending in -d or -t without the extra -e- (✗ du arbeitst → ✓ du arbeitest).
